The long-nosed seahorse

Startpakke.com is a sponsor of the long-nosed seahorse.

In English the seahorse is called "Unicorn Seahorse". This is because it has a small protuberance on its head that may resemble a unicorn's horn. The fish is one of the so-called needle fish.

The male gets pregnant

The long-nosed seahorse has a very special breeding biology. It is the male that becomes pregnant. The male carries and hatches the eggs.

The female simply lays eggs in the male's brood pouch, after which they grow large. When it's time to hatch the eggs, the male goes into what looks like labour and all the eggs hatch at the same time. A litter can contain several hundred chicks!

In long-nosed seahorses, it is the male who does the hard work. He hatches all the young in about 60 seconds. In the video you can see what it looks like when the male hatches the young in the wild.

What you didn't know about seahorses

Seahorses are beautiful and special creatures, looking almost ethereal as they majestically swim slowly through the water. There are many legends and myths about the seahorse. In fact, it is perhaps the fish that, over the centuries, has given rise to the most myths and legends. Throughout history, seahorses have been compared to dragons, living chess pieces, sea gods and fairytale creatures.
