Why a good top mattress is important

The top mattress is in direct contact with your body when you sleep (perhaps separated by the sheet and roll mattress). Therefore, it is hugely important for your sleep experience. As well as providing good support, it needs to be good at wicking heat and moisture away from your body so you don't wake up in a sweat. Many people struggle with feeling very hot at night. This can be due to their top mattress, among other things. If the top mattress is made of cheap foam materials, such as cold foam, the heat cannot be conducted away from the body properly. A good top mattress should be made of latex or memory foam, both of which are natural materials that allow the body to breathe. When choosing a top mattress, choose one that is both flexible and supportive. At the same time, it should relieve pressure whether you lie on your side or your back. Only if the top mattress allows the heavy parts of your body (shoulders, hips) to sink down a little further will your spine be kept straight so you avoid back and neck pain.

Further down, we make several suggestions for good top mattresses in different price ranges

How to choose the best top mattress

Here we briefly review what you need to keep in mind when looking for a good top mattress. When choosing a top mattress, it is important that you choose one that has a good height. At least 4 - 5 cm, but preferably more. The cover should be either bamboo or cotton, so it doesn't feel hot and synthetic against your skin. Last but not least, the top mattress should of course fit your bed, i.e. have the right dimensions. If you have an elevating bed, it's a good idea to choose a split mattress topper, which can split if you and your partner adjust the bed differently.

In general, there are three types of mattress topper materials: latex, memory and cold foam. Here we have chosen to recommend a latex or memory foam top mattress, with latex being the best choice for most. Read more about this further down in the text. If you have a bad back, you need to pay special attention to the mattress you choose. We have also chosen to elaborate on this below.

For the vast majority, a latex top mattress be the best choice. However, this is not the cheapest top mattress, but your bed in particular is a good place to invest a little extra. Latex has the property that it is very flexible, supportive and allows the body to breathe. As it is a natural material, it wicks moisture away from your body so you don't wake up bathed in sweat. Many people suffer from being very hot at night and change duvets and pillows rather than considering the choice of top mattress. A good latex mattress topper lets your skin breathe and gives you a good sleeping experience. If you often feel cold at night and are generally cold-hearted, read on, because a latex mattress is not necessarily the best top mattress.

Memory foam, also called memory foam, is another popular choice of material for top mattresses. Mattresses of memory foam  shapes itself to the contours of your body, giving you the feeling of being wrapped in the mattress, because you just sink into it without the mattress giving way. At the same time, the foam retains heat, so this type of mattress is the best top mattress for those who often freeze at night. Your shoulders and hips will sink further into the mattress than the rest of your body, ensuring that your spine is kept straight.

If you have a bad back ...

If you, like many others, suffer from back pain and perhaps a bad back, a good top mattress may well be the solution to a better sleep experience and thus less pain. However, it should also be mentioned that a good top mattress may not be enough, but a whole new bed.

A good mattress topper works best if it sits on top of a good, supportive mattress. This can be on either a continental bed, box mattress or an elevation bed. The top mattress should thus provide the final comfort on top of the other mattresses. If you have a bad back, it is important to have a mattress that has at least 5 - 7 comfort zones, so that your body is relieved as much as possible.

If you sweat at night, you can switch to a latex mattress topper, duvet, pillow and roll-up mattress with kapok fibre.

What is kapok fibre?

The fibres come from a Kapok tree, which resembles a palm tree. The seeds look like the one in the picture, and the natural fibres are extracted from them. No chemicals or other harmful substances are used in the manufacturing process. The material is therefore 100 % organic. The kapok fibres are a highly sustainable product, as the seeds grow on trees - and these keep coming without the tree being cut down or otherwise damaged, which is bad for our environment.

Because it is a natural material, kapok fibres are temperature-regulating, hypoallergenic and antibacterial. Products with these fibres, e.g. from Cocoon, are a bit expensive, but on the other hand they are temperature-regulating and particularly suitable for sleeping with.

The brand Cocoon makes the most delicious products with Kapok fibers, which are sold at Sundleg - see more here.
